Hank May Finds Out What Makes Life Worth Living on “Where I’m Calling From” Sep 15, 2021

September 15, 2021—Emerging singer, songwriter and producer Hank May shares his new single “Where I’m Calling From” today; listen HERE and watch its accompanying video HERE. The song, which premiered with Flood Magazine, is off May’s forthcoming debut album, One More Taste of the Good Stuff, out October 15 via Dangerbird Records—pre-save/pre-order HERE. The music video for “Where I’m Calling From” is its own sweet full-circle moment, reuniting May with acclaimed director Suzie Vlcek. Vlcek first recruited May as a young Silver Lake local to star as one of the protagonists in her iconic 2006 video for Silversun Pickups’ breakout hit “Lazy Eye.”

“This song is about a hot day in Los Angeles. It’s also about the times when becoming intimate with someone requires you to show them how sad and fucked up your life is,” says May. “This song will humbly accept being called earnest, though it would prefer to be called sincere. Oh, and I named it after a song by my cousin David’s old band the American Princes, my way of tipping my hat to my number one influence growing up. His song might be named after the Raymond Carver story, if so then I guess that would make this a song named after a song named after a story named after a feeling.”

“Where I’m Calling From” is the fourth cut from May’s forthcoming debut, following lead single “NBC,”“2019” and “Patsy DeKline,” which premiered with Under the Radar.

After spending much of his 20s living and playing in New York, May moved home to Los Angeles where he was closer to his family and able to turn the accumulation of notes, phrases and melodies in his head into a record. He wrote much of One More Taste of the Good Stuff in his childhood home, shut away in a sound-proofed practice room adorned with Christmas lights that his father built for him growing up – a room that was demolished soon after he finished recording. The songs that came out of that isolated space possess a similar yearning for human connection, with lyrics that focus on the whimsical minutiae of brief encounters as well as long-standing relationships that ended during this time, such as the passing of Hank’s close friend and biggest supporter.

One More Taste of the Good Stuff features contributions from longtime collaborators and friends including bassist Patrick Taylor, drummer Mark Gardener and keyboardist Max Foreman. Brian Rosemeyer (Cat Power, Kurt Vile) is the record’s mix engineer, and Dave Cooley (Paramore, Tame Impala) hopped on mastering.
