T. Hardy Morris & Transistor Six Premiere "Audition Tapes" Music Video & Lomography Photos

If you’re fearless at 14 you’ll likely be fearless as life continues. If you’re scared of life at 14, well, good luck I guess.” – T. Hardy Morris

T. Hardy Morris and the Austin, TX based independent film, art, and music collective Transistor Six are excited to present the incredibly sentimental and beautifully shot music film for “Audition Tapes”, the title track from Morris’ critically acclaimed debut solo album.

Watch video, explore photos, and listen to exclusive audio session at Transistor Six.

“We wanted the video to be pretty literal,” says Morris, “so we just recruited the boys from the local Austin band Residual Kid to essentially be themselves. We went to a skate park and a few other places around Austin that fit the theme. They were good sports about the video and are pretty fearless. I think they’ll be fine.”

Transistor Six co-founder Cory Llewellyn “Using vintage Super 8 cameras we wanted to have the story told in a home movie kind of way invoking memories versus being too literal. That nostalgic feeling also lends itself in the Lomography photos we shot with Hardy.”

This fall Morris will continue to tour in support of the album, playing shows with Jason Isbell, Television, Drive By Truckers, and along side Willy Mason and more at the Communion Records Nashville showcase. Click here for tour dates.

The courthouse anchors the essential center of historic Sparta and has been the site of numerous historic trials and events. The courthouse is still in use but suffers from lack of funding for maintenance and preservation. The building is in a state of decline.

ABOUT THE ROCK HOUSE
Story/significance: This two-story 1780s house is constructed of 24-inch-thick field stones and is recognized as the oldest surviving stone house in Georgia. The house was constructed by the Ansley family who received the land in 1783, fifteen years after the town of Wrightsborough was founded as the southernmost settlement of Quakers in America. The house remained privately owned until 1966, when the Wrightsborough Quaker Community Foundation purchased and restored the house with the intention of using it as a museum.

T. Hardy Morris Live Performance Videos from The Georgia Trust "Places In Peril" Historic Sites

Inspired by The Georgia Trust For Historic Preservation‘s annual “Places In Peril” list musician T. Hardy Morris and filmmaker Jason Thrasher traveled to historic sites in Georgia threatened by demolition and neglect to film live performance videos of each song on his debut solo album, Audition Tapes (in stores July 30th).

Watch the first of these videos for “Lucky” filmed at Traveler’s Rest historic site in Toccoa, GA. Learn more about Places In Peril and watch the series unfold at http://t.hardymorris.com/placesinperil

I’ve always been more interested in the past than the future. I’m fascinated by how people lived, how civilizations have risen & fallen, and especially by the things that have been left behind. Looking back, we find countless stories of people who had to preserve and survive. Now, it seems, all we do is consume and squander.

As musicians, many of us seek out gear that is older; handmade instruments and amps built from the best materials on hand in a time before the bottom line took over the craft. I think it’s great that musicians recognize the quality in older workmanship, but it shouldn’t stop there. We love our old guitars and restored cars, why not our homes? Our studios?

I’ve spent my life in a South full of history; some parts worth preserving, some parts better left behind. This project focuses more on the physical remnants from my home state. The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation takes time each year to create a list of Places in Peril. These are historically significant structures from around the state of Georgia which are in particular need of awareness and repair.

My friend and photographer, Jason Thrasher, and I recently traveled to ten of these places in peril where at each spot he filmed myself (and fellow Athens musicians Matt “pistol” Stoessel and Thayer Sarrano) playing an acoustic version of one song from my upcoming album Audition Tapes (out July 30th).

We wanted the videos to be quick & spontaneous and give people a glimpse of how important we feel it is preserve what we have before we just pave over it to build something soul-less and bland. Come on people. The future is history anyway.

-Hardy

Dangerbird Records Signs T. Hardy Morris of Dead Confederate & Diamond Rugs

Venerable luminary of psychedelic grunge, T. Hardy Morris is set to release his debut solo album, Audition Tapes this summer on Dangerbird Records.

Morris is best known for his work with Dead Confederate, a band that he co-founded and has recorded and toured with since 2006. More recently, Morris formed Diamond Rugs, the raggedly righteous gang of rockers that also includes members of Deer Tick, The Black Lips and Los Lobos. Morris took some time over the past year to write a collection of songs that reflect the best qualities of his group projects while also exploring entirely new sonic territories. Audition Tapes exposes Morris’ considerable depth as a songwriter and taps into his vast experiences as a performer, having toured extensively over the past 6 years with the likes of the Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., Deer Tick, Manchester Orchestra, Drive By Truckers and many more.

Audition Tapes was helmed by Cosmic Thug (Adam Landry and Justin Collins), the Nashville-based production duo behind the aforementioned Deer Tick, Diamond Rugs and Middle Brother projects. Hardy says of the making of the album, “For obvious reasons, I knew I wanted to record Audition Tapes onto tape, and preferably in a small studio, recorded as live as possible, late at night. So that’s pretty much what we did over in Nashville.”

Audition Tapes finds Morris abundantly inspired, oftentimes invoking the grand spirits of Elliot Smtih, Alex Chilton or fellow Georgian Vic Chesnutt. On songs such as “Quit Diggin”, “Hard Stuff” and especially the gorgeous title track, listeners are treated to intimate, fragile performances, so informal that we are invited to hear creaks and count-offs, finger taps on guitar strings and other warm and extraneous studio noise.

The whole affair is so perfectly imperfect that you feel as if you’ve stumbled upon it all on your own – a hushed secret. Dangerbird Records founder Peter Walker said, “This is the kind of songwriting and performance that you can really lean into – the record cuts through any sort of pretense and nails you straight in the heart from its first breath.”
